Daughter of the Cyber Dragons (The Cyber Dragons #1) by C.T. Phipps – Book Review

Daughter of the Cyber Dragons is another action-packed collaboration between C.T. Phipps and Michael Suttkus. It’s a cyberpunk comedy jammed full of pop culture references and triple crosses that’ll keep you guessing until the end.

The world building was great. It was a post-apocalyptic setting with very specific formative events that shaped it as well as unique tech that is relevant to the story. New Los Angeles felt vivid and appropriate for the story.

The plot started out pretty straight forward. Kei is a courier of sorts and she gets an offer for an extremely dangerous job that pays a ridiculous amount of money. As the story progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that this deadly assignment is deeply tangled in her origin story. It makes for an action-oriented narrative that still develops its MC. I will say that there were a few parts where the twists and turns just kept coming. It wasn’t confusing, per se, but there were so many twists that I started to get numb to the revelations. All-in-all the storyline was still good, just a scosh over the top in parts.

My favorite aspect of this novel was the characters. Kei is the protagonist; a cybernetically enhanced courier with a mysterious background and all the training of an elite assassin. She is funny and dynamic and makes for a good focal point for this story about a job that is too good to be true. I don’t want to give away any spoilers but there was also another surprise appearance of a character from another of Phipps’ series that plays a significant role. In fact, the overlap between those storylines was a cool bonus to a story that I would have enjoyed anyway. The rest of the characters are also quirky and entertaining. It was a diverse cast of rejects, everything from rogue A.I.s to stone cold brothel madams.

So if you are in the mood for a funny cyber punk adventure, Daughter of the Cyber Dragons should go on your TBR. It was a brisk read populated by memorable characters.
